Isaac's Journal

This has been a super fun month for you, Isaac. We’ve been doing tons of fun summer play: water balloons, bike rides, wading in the creek, picnics and batting practice at the park . . . You are loving it. You even had a soccer camp for two hours a day for five days. It was so weird because you never wanted to go but then you came home saying you had fun. I think you were taken with your (British) coach, but maybe soccer isn’t really your game.

We went camping a couple of times last month and you still can’t stand to leave. This year we let you bring your bike and ride around the campground loop by yourself. It kept you very occupied and you were so good about watching for cars and staying to the side of the road. You are also very obsessed with making fires and even got a little burn last time because you are so eager to “help”. We camped at Center Lake both times and you just adored the beach time and the fishing. You even went on a hike with Mommy, Daddy and Papa, bush-whacking up the mountain and keeping up very well. I love it that you love outdoors, Isaac!

You have pretty well dropped your nap all together. I still make you lay quietly on the bed for a while, and then I used to let you look at books. Problem was, you don’t really like looking at books – you like being READ to. So Grammie bought you a whole library of Children’s Story Hour cds and you LOVE them. You ask for more and more every day! I am so thankful for this solution so that you enjoy yourself AND I still get some quiet time.

Speaking of reading, you are coming along very well. We still read together every day and you like reading actual books versus the actual curriculum that I have. So I have backed off from pressuring you to do that and instead we are really enjoying the reading that you CAN do! You are excited to start kindergarten this fall (though you wish you were in first grade like several friends). I feel like I am in a much better position with you than I was a year ago, Isaac – I think you will be a willing and eager pupil and I am so grateful.

You got a model rocket for your birthday. Finally two nights ago you and Dad built it and last night we launched it. The look on your face after the first launch was priceless. “WOW – that was so awesome!” Unfortunately after the second (900ft) launch, we lost the rocket. I guess we’ll have to build another one because it was definitely a hit. I’ve been excited that you are building a little bit – an awesome Duplo castle for one. You’ve also been quite taken with making Origami butterflies after reading a story about a girl who does the same.
